CSA vegatables are not Runway Models...
1. Fancy displays and colorful packages. The vegetables and fruits are harvested and arrive
fresh.
They are rinsed but not triple washed and "ready to eat." EXPECT dirt. (this may sound silly but
foreign to the typical supermarket experience)
2. Designed to or originated to save money. As the price of retail food and fuel has increased, it
has been a welcomed surprise and possible trend to those who continue to participate. The
primary focus for farmers or membership is not providing or receiving CHEAP food. Its about
human and soil health.
3. Contributing to ground water contamination to grow food faster, pesticides to reduce loss of
produce and labor costs, (weeding is labor intensive but the soil doesn't mind!) or the million of
acres of farmland lost each year to urban development.
4. A commercial food system when the same foods will be available every day of the week. Our
food is harvested ripe. Supermarket fair is picked green and packaged so it will survive the
average 1500mile truck trip to the supermarket shelf. Produce produces the most flavor as it
ripens on the vine not the TRUCK.
5. A supermarket where you can pick and choose. It requires a commitment to be flexible and
adventurous with your cooking and eating habits!
